🏋🏻‍♂️💪SOCCER STRENGTH KELOWNA SATURDAY - UNILATERAL STRENGTH - I have a lot of love for big compound movements, such as the squat and deadlift. They get you strong, they can make you fast, and also reduce the risk of injury. However, these movements load the entire body pretty much evenly, and challenge both sides at once. In other words these movements use both sides of the body, which makes them bilateral.

🏃‍♂️It may not seem important when training, however think about soccer, how much time do you actually spend using both legs at once, little to none. Soccer is a one legged sport or unilateral. We sprint, run, throw, kick, dive, change direction, cut, jump, all by loading up one side more than the other. Injuries can happen due to discrepancies in strength, mobility, or activation between the left/right or anterior/posterior sides of the body.

⚽️WHY DO THIS?
Unilateral training can remedy imbalances in the body unique to the individual player and the specific demands of his/her position in soccer. They are also necessary for the development of a strong, balanced, powerful player.
They stress only one side of the body, forcing you to compensate for this uneven load distribution by activating your muscles properly. Movements like the ones shown challenge you not only to balance the load over one limb, but also activate the muscles of the hip, groin, and low back to stabilise this uneven load.

💪UNILATERAL MOVEMENTS - Here are some examples -
1. Split Squat
2. Single Leg RDL
3. Lateral & Curtsy Lunge
4. Single Leg Hip Thrust
5. TRX Skater Squat
In the coming weeks I will break down hip dominant & knee dominant movements, the muscles that are worked during each exercise, and give you examples of more unilateral drills.
